linked TOC in navigation pane?

Is there is a way to put the Table of Contents (TOC) in the navigation pane? In the navigation pane I see page thumbnails. Ideally, the TOC would be linked so clicks on the TOC in the navigation pane (like the page thumbnails) would jump to the appropriate part of the doc.
