unable to open the initial device in Ghostscritp terms means that it couldât read the input file for the conversion, which is a Postscript file located at %temp%\pdfcreator\spool, This can mainly have 2 reasons:
- The permissions of the %temp% and/or %temp%\pdfcreator\spool are broken in such a way that the user account canât access the folder and containing files.
- There is an encoding issue which can potentially cause Ghostscript to look at the wrong path.
Please set the logging level to âtraceâ in the PDFCreator application settings, print something to reproduce the issue and post the resulting log here (or send it to me as pm) and we will have a look at it. The first issue can easily be solved o user end, the second issue will need a fix and/or Ghostscript update from our end which is planned for the near future.

if you have already checked the permissions for your temp path and those are correct, it is most likely the encoding problem in Ghostscript. Please download the latest 32 bit version of Ghostscript here: https://github.com/ArtifexSoftware/ghostpdl-downloads/releases/download/gs922/gs922w32.exe
After installing it, replace the âbinâ and âlibâ folders in C:\program files\PDFCreator\Ghostscript with those from the new Ghostscript installation.
Alternatively you could wait until we release the next update which will include the new Ghostscript version directly, the update should be here before Christmas.

I am afraid the issue you are facing is somewhat different, as Ghostscript seems to be able to resolve all required paths and filenames properly, but then fails during the actual conversion, which is more or less a black box for us. It might not be possible to do anything about this from our end. Do you get the error for all documents you try to convert, or only when printing a specific document / printing from a specific application?

I got this error mostly when printing pages from Google Chrome, Test prints from within pdfcreator work fine.
Printing the same web page from firefox works fine too.
Has there been a fix for this issue? I users in my environment having this issue when trying to print to pdf. These are larger documents and we have not changed off of version 2.3.0. It doesnât seem like PDF Forge is aware of the fix and if they are I donât see it published here.

If yes, you might need to remove/flatten any kind of transparent elements, which can cause issues due to Postscript limitations.

Thanks for the response. I actually started with the latest version, then tried the older version as per the troubleshooting steps in the thread.
I get the same error code. However I can re-load the new version and get the Log if you like?

Hi,
if you already tried with the new version, I am afraid it most likely will not help. I just saw the âFastWebViewâ setting being enabled in the log,which used to potentially cause issues in older PDFCreator versions. This is disabled by default in later PDFCreator releases, also an updated Ghostscript version is used.
There is also a chance that the Postscript generated during the print job is somehow invalid, does it print correctly on a different Postscript printer?

They are able to print to a networked Canon with a PCL 6 driver. but I have no idea how. I cant get it to work on other PCL drivers. nothing in the driver config stands out.
I checked with the app support for the program im using, but they just said it was designed for USB receipt printer. they donet even know how this one managed to work with a canon. but I asked about what coding or protocol it used, they didnt really know. (wonderful support, right?)
Im probably just going to break down and get a receipt printer.
