I create Word documents in Letter format and use PDF to generate both Letter and A4 size PDF files. With version 1.4 (I think) when I created a PDF for A4 the US Letter page would be scaled and centered on the A4 page. When I upgraded my computer I installed version 1.6 of PDF creator and now when I create A4 PDF files from US Letter word docs the page is scaled properly, but it is placed at the bottom of the page rather than centering it. I don’t know if this change occurred due to a change in PDF Creator or because I’m now using Win7 instead of XP. Is there an option to center the output on the page?
Hi,
this probably has to be done from the printing application. ( I assume your Word version changed together with the Windows version).
Please also read this (if you havn´t done so allready) http://www.pdfforge.org/content/i-have-selected-letter-8511-paperformat-wordexcel-generated-pdfs-are-a4

I’m not sure how that could be. Word does not control how the printer (PDF creator) uses the printer’s own settings.
My procedure is to select PDF creator as the printer from Word’s print menu.
Click on print properties which are PDF creator’s print properties not Word’s.
Click on advanced. (PDF Creator Advanced Options dialog).
Select paper size (US Letter or A4 whichever version I’m generating).
Click OK and then print which then brings up the PDF creator dialog.
I then select defined settings I have for A4 or US Letter print and save the PDF file.
This all works well except that A4 which is no longer centered as it used to be.
The only difference I see in behavior in the dialogs is that when I select A4 in the Advanced print properties dialog, and click OK, it does not remember the setting and reverts back to US letter when I check to see if it was set properly.
Is it possible the PDF creator is forcing this setting to be the same as it is for Word’s page setup? Obviously, I cannot change the page size in word because it would force a re-layout of the entire document messing up the index and table of contents, etc.
Thanks for your interest.
Hi,
word doesn´t control the printer´s printer settings, but the option “Scale content for A4 or 8.5”*11" paper sizes" does influence the output.
To set A4 paper size for the printer permanently, you will need to do it from the windows control panel, settings which are made “while printing” are only temporary.

I see no such option as “Scale content for A4” in WIndows 7 Office 2010.
Why would I want to permanently change the setting to A4? Didn’t I end my last post by saying I cannot change the paper size because it would alter the document layout?
Hi,
here is a screenshot of where the option is located.

I only explained why it always goes back to US letter.
I would also love to give you a direct solution for this, but that is impossible as long as the problem can´t even be recreated on our test machine.

Eureka!
I found a solution.
In Word 2010, go to
File->Options->Advanced
Scroll down to print section
Select “Scale content for A4 or 8.5 x 11” paper sizes
Then print to PDF Creator using the normal process for selecting A4.
And voila it scales and centers the letter page in the A4 page like I used to get!
Place that in your tips and tricks bag.
Thanks,
Terry
