Size of reprints

Hi,
when I reprint a pdf the result is about 7 times larger. Is there anything I can do about that?
I.e. Printing a text document to pdfcreator results in a pdf of 11K. Printing that pdf again results in one of 78K.
(the reason for reprinting is to merge multiple pdfs that are accumulated over time into one. The originals are not kept after they have been printed to pdfcreator)

Hi,

it could depend on the printing application, please try if printing from a different PDF viewer solves the issue. Which viewer are you currently printing from?

best regards,

Hallo,
I was using the Adobe Reader Version 11.0.10 and have now tried to print from the Foxit reader 7.1 to pdfcreator. The resulting pdf is now 77K. So hardly any difference and still way larger than the original pdf. Can you suggest another viewer?

Best regards,

Hi,

I tested several viewers, but there didn’t seem to be an optimal solution. The PDF Architect created the smallest file sizes when reprinting small <10 kb PFDs generated from text, the larger the original text file is, the worse the resulting factor of increasing file size. The problem seems to be the text is converted to outlines/shapes when printing from any of the tested viewers (PDF Architect, SumatraPDF, Foxit Reader, Adobe Reader), we will have a look if there is something we can do about this or if it is a problem with Ghostscript or the printing applications.

best regards,

Hi,
thanks. All I can say is that about a year ago when I was doing the same exercise (merging the accumulated small pdfs into one) the problem didn’t occur.
Unfortunately I can’t tell what has changed on my machine in the mean time: there has certainly been an update of pdfcreator (1.7.3 to 2.0.2), probably an update of adobe reader (9 to 11?) and of course multiple updates of Win7.
I hope you can do something about it.
Kind regards,

Hi,

if you mainly need this for merging, you could try using our free PDF Architect create module to do it, as it doesn’t reprint the PDFs in order to merge them.

best regards,

Thanks Robin, this has worked marvelously.
The combination obtained via the create module of PDF Architect is less than half the size that I got by reprinting and merging with PDF creator.
That is really great, thanks a lot for that suggestion.
Best regards,
P.S. but it would still be nice if reprinting a PDF with PDF creator would not increase the size of the resulting PDF. In fact I have used this technique sometimes to make PDF’s that other people had created more acceptable for publication on a web site.

Hi,

yes we hope we can do something there, but initial tests made it look like it mainly depends on what the viewer sends to the printer; I also tested PDFCreator 1.7.3 and it didn’t seem to make a difference.
