Is PDF 1.5 better than 1.4? Why is the default 1.4 in PDFCreator? For maximum compatibility, or is 1.4 better than 1.5?

yes, basically it is good to have the the secification number as low as possible. The main advantage of higher PDF Levels (for our use) is the encryption level. So if you need AES encryption, you will require PDF 1.5. If not, 1.4 is just fine and allows older readers to open the file.
