Registration Failures

I had purchased, installed and registered PDF Architect Pro in November 2013. Everything worked properly at that time. I had not used it for about a month. When I opened it this morning I observed all of the modules, except Create, were “Not Activated”.

I went back to the registration e-mail from Upclick and tried to re-apply the activation key and received the error “We are unable to activate you application now”. It gave me a list of things to try (check internet connection, verify license key, check the firewall) all of which was not useful.

I called tech support who immediately wanted remote access to my PC. It’s a work laptop so I am not permitted to allow third parties to access it. She then said she would send me a file that would help me get registered. The e-mail was blocked by my e-mail provider with the message "The message “offline activation for PDF Architect, step 1” from agent152 (agent152@upbill.com) contained a
virus or a suspicious attachment."

So I am stuck. Any advice on what to do next?

Nothing has changed on my system. Every other application is acting normally.

You sent me a link to an exe that creates an" OPI" file that you want me to send back. There is no explanation on what an “OPI” file is (an internet search came up mysteriously empty) what it contains or how I can view the contents prior to sending it to you. For all I know it contains every user name\password combination on my system. The level of trust you seem to extract from your customers is unusually high.

I have the same issue.  Purchased in Dec and activated with no issues.

Now when I attempt to re-enter the activation key I get the error: "We are unable to activate your application now, please try the following: - Check your Internet connection, - Verify your License key and re-enter it,  - Check your security settings to make sure activation is not blocked by your firewall"

By digging deeper I found this similar thread:  http://www.pdfarchitect.org/support/i-cant-activate-pdf-architect-due-connection-error-which-firewallproxy-settings-do-i-need

And it states: "Please make sure that a request to http://activation.pdfarchitect.org is possible."

I've tried that link with IE 10.0.9, Firefox, Google Chrome and Safari but all provide an "access forbidden response."

Any ideas of what settings to change?

Hi,

it is normal the URL can’t be accessed by a browser.
It just means you need to make sure your firewall is not blocking PDF Architect from accessing it.
If you are using a proxy server, you will need to configure the proxy settings in the Internet Explorer, as the PDF Architect uses those. If this doesn’t help, please contact our phone support, they can help you more directly and provide you with an offline actication if neccesary.

Robin,

It is NOT the end users problem and you know it. If he is able to access every other url on the planet but only your activation url cannot be reached, it is not a problem on the customers end. You need to fix your registration system. Your off-line activation system is preposterous. This really confuses me, you have an amazing product but you muck it up with a needlessly overbearing activation scheme.

Their response is to send you an exe that scans your system to create an encrypted “opi” file. Even though it’s your information you have no ability to see what information it is extracting from your system and sending to them. They will tell you, “The
.opi file contains a hash which gets calculated from your machine &
cpu ids but is not reversible, so only your machine can produce this
hash, but we can’t read the information back out of it.
” and then say something to the effect of "don’t you trust us?"

Don’t get me wrong, I succumbed and went through the process and I love the software, but the activation process keeps me from ever referring the software to my company or friends.

Hi,

we are aware the activation procedure isn’t perfect and there is definitely work being done on this.
It has been a problem with the end users configuration in many cases though too, so this is always the first step. If someone is behind a proxy server and hasn’t configured his Internet Explorer, but a different browser, he will be able to access any URL in the other browser, but the PDF Architect will not be able to connect because it uses the Internet Explorers proxy settings. In most cases, the activation works flawlessly. The offline activation as it is now is only a temporary workaround.

Robin,

You must have attended Baghdad Bob’s school of spin. I was never at any time behind a proxy server. I had tried accessing via multiple browsers (IE, Chrome & Firefox) and could surf to any other secured site in the world but couldn’t get to your activation servers. You continue to point towards the user when the trouble is obviously on your end.

“In most cases, the activation works flawlessly.” Except when it doesn’t.

Terry,

Today was day two of calling tech support… not sure if there were any changes made on the activation server or not but my original Key continued to provide me with the same errors.  Tech Support suggested we try a new key…  I figured yeh that’s not gonna help but it Did!

Got right in and activated and back up and running.  She said that sometimes a driver update or OS update can cause the system to think it is a new install.  All she did was verify my purchase and provide me a new Key!

May give it a try!

This is insane. It’s a product activation. I have used hundreds (if not thousands) of software titles and never have I had to have someone remotely access my computer or have me run some (spyware?) software to extract data from my system to send it to the company.

The initial activation went smoothly, what happened?!?

Hi,

I am currently looking into this issue.
Did your internet/proxy settings change when it stopped working?
The file sent to you is an .exe, so your email provider most likely classifies all executables as suspicious. I have sent you a mail containing a link, so you can download the file and check it with an anti-virus software of your choice.
