[SOLVED]:PDFCreator v1.4.1 not working/TEMP Files issues? (Win7 Pro x64)

 Good morning/Good Day/Good evening,

First I would like to thank the PDFForge team for all of their efforts with PDFCreator. It's a great tool, and I use it personally on my home network.

Recently I upgraded my home server from Windows XP to Windows 7 (along with new hardware as well.) With the current machine, I have a Solid state boot disk (C:), and a mechanical (standard) data drive (D:) where the user profiles and TEMP files reside. When I reinstalled the server installation of PDFCreator the install completed successfully but it appears to not be working as a PDF printer. It literally eats print jobs. In reading through the forums here I discovered some things that I could check. I enabled logging via the registry and find that the log file that is created isn't very descriptive. Here's what I've noticed when I print to the PDFCreator printer from Microsoft Word/Excel/etc:

1. The directory C:\\Windows\\Temp\\PDFCreator\\Spool is created, but no data is found within.

2. D:\\Temp\\PdfCreator\\Spool is created, and the print jobs' files (*.inf & *.ps) are both created each time I print.

3. The internal PDFCreator logging facility is unchanged, only showing the startup log messages.

4. PDFCreator shows no activity & nothing is created in the Auto-Save output folder.

Both the user & system environment variables %TEMP% & %TMP% are set to the same folder. C:\\Windows\\Temp is not specified anywhere that I was able to find to this leads me to believe that this may be hardcoded in PDFCreator, or in a settings file/registry key I could not locate. My `_pdfcmonLog.txt` file is as follows:

`[13.05.2012 18:04:51]Modul-PdfStartDocPort=Start`

`[13.05.2012 18:04:51]PrinterName=PDFCreator`

I've been following this thread and saw this solution which I don't think applies since my environment variables seem to already be set to the same thing..

Any new ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

maybe you don´t have full permissions for that path, try setting both user environment variables to %USERPROFILE%\\AppData\\Local\\Temp, which is the default.

regards,

Robin

 Hi Robin,

Thanks for the reply. I'll check the path, although I believe the security settings are wide open. As far as the userprofile path, it doesn't seem like PDFCreator is using that path -at all- as I indicated in my earlier message. It's using both a hard coded C:\\Windows\\Temp, and D:\\Temp but not %USERPROFILE% anything. My screen shot isn't showing up in the earlier message, but you can see that those user profile temp settings are still intact, here.

Any other ideas? Can I help the dev team to troubleshoot this further by providing any additional details?

OK, I've updated to 1.4.1, and it seems that one issue- the Save button/administrator permissions issues w/ saving the options has been corrected.

PDFCreator still does not work, and now I can confirm why. When I print (in this case from Microsoft Excel) it generates the files from the printer in D:\\Temp\\PDFCreator\\spool\\ but it also creates a directory C:\\Windows\\Temp\\PDFCreator\\spool. When I copy the post script file that the printer created in D:\\Temp\\PDFCreator\\spool to C:\\Windows\\Temp\\PDFCreator\\spool\\ the PDF is automatically generated, perfectly.

You may recall that I don't want temp files written to my SSD (C:) so I have changed both the %TMP% and %TEMP% system variables to point to D:\\TEMP. I've also confirmed that path and permissions are correctly owned and set. CLEARLY the PDFCreator printer is able to write to this path, it's just not looking for it at that path.

Additionally I attempted to delete C:\\Windows\\Temp\\PDFCreator and it allows me to delete it, and then it is immediately recreated.

Developers, please. If you are willing, I will work with you, screen share if possible to troubleshoot this, but I still believe this is a hard coded temp path. Please let me help you help me. :) Thanks for your continued efforts.

Excatly the same context, exactly the same problem, even with 1.4.1

I've 'emailed' Philip the developer (via this forum) w/ my personal email address and an offer to live troubleshoot this issue w/ him. Hopefully we can get this resolved soon. If anyone has any interim workarounds (short of a Task that copies the files to the C:\\Windows\\Temp\\PDFCreator\\spool directory) I would love to hear them. I still don't want temporary files written to the SSD. :)

Version 1.4.1 still does not work for me.

The uninstall of 1.4.0 worked, and the new install of 1.4.1 went fine.

Same problem, eror #75

don

 Hey slug,

I haven't received any kind of an error message from my install. Where are you getting the error #75 from? What are you doing right before? Hmm.. that hasn't happened to me. :\\

here is a screenshot of my variables

http://twitpic.com/9yjenw

 Hi Philip,

Thank you for your reply, it is appreciated and quite fulfilling to know that developers are actively involved in the forum.

While I can see your point with your install, Windows Vista, Windows 7, and Windows Server 2008 handle user space and system variables differently. I believe this is also due to permissions changes (UAC) and user path changes (x:\\Users vs. x:\\Documents and Settings.) Windows Server 2003 is more like Windows XP in how it handles things, and never had any issues with PDFCreator on Windows XP.

In this screenshot (http://dl.dropbox.com/u/7974125/!ScreenShots/032.ATLOFFICE.Env.png) you can see that I've left the default USER TMP/TEMP as previously directed by RobinW. The SYSTEM TEMP variables are the ones that were changed to point to the mechanical hard drive, D:\\. Does that answer your question?

I just installed 1.4.1 and am unable to print.  I get the error

75 (Path/File access error)

I've tried to understand this thread, but am not particularly computer savy.  Has this issue been resolved?

the same problem was found in me.

Why the program creates the second subdirectory "2" or "3"?

C:\\Documents and Settings\\user\\Local Settings\\Temp\\2\\PdfCreator\\Spool

already there is a directory in "TEMP"!
C:\\Documents and Settings\\user\\Local Settings\\Temp\\PDFCreator\\Spool.

the second week it is impossible to work normally.

The problem arises only in case of automatically start of the sheduled task. (windows server 2003 R2 SP2).
Manually everything works.
Same user.

Hi,

thank you very much for the detailed information,

could you kindly also post your setuplog.txt?

regards,

Robin

thanks roswell,

is the behaviour exactly like descibed above "When I print ... it generates the files from the printer in D:\\Temp\\PDFCreator\\spool\\ but it also creates a directory C:\\Windows\\Temp\\PDFCreator\\spool. When I copy the post script file that the printer created in D:\\Temp\\PDFCreator\\spool to C:\\Windows\\Temp\\PDFCreator\\spool\\ the PDF is automatically generated, perfectly."? With the same paths and everything?

Robin

ho yes exactly the same. :-(

Here's my setuplog.txt file from the latest install attempt. The latest attempt was via Remote Desktop however I've made several install attempts both with UAC on and off to attempt to resolve this issue. This was pulled from C:\\Program FIles (x86)\\PDFCreator. In looking it over it seems that the installer is seeing the USER temp paths, but doesn't specify the SYSTEM ones.. This is probably normal behavior for an installer I'd imagine and probably is unrelated to our issue? Let me know what else I can provide.

Hello,

I had a look at this here. I have set up a Windows 2003 Server, moved the profiles to D:\\ and have installed PDFCreator. Both, PDFCreator and the printer driver (pdfcmon.dll) use the same path and the printing works fine.

So this does not look like a general problem right now, but something in the individual configuration.

Did you change the TMP variable for the user or for the system? (Or both)

In general, PDFCreator should use the user variable and will fall back to the system variable if the user variable does not exist. If the printer driver uses D:\\Temp it indicates a problem already

In my setup, pdfcmon.dll placed the file in D:\\Profiles\\Administrator\\Local Settings\\Temp\\PDFCreator\\Spool, which is the proper path.

What are the values of your user and system TMP paths?

kind regards,
Philip

 Hi joneekay & slug13,

I don't believe the issue that you're encountering is the same as what I've been dealing with. I think you may want to post a separate thread in this forum to have it addressed. I know that your file/path errors can probably be pretty easily traced if you enable advanced logging as described by Robin W. from support below:

"We have added advanced logging abilities to the pdfcmon.dll in version 1.4.0 and now we need your help : please enable logging by adding the following DWORD value to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\\SYSTEM\\CurrentControlSet\\Control\\Print\\Monitors\\pdfcmon in your registry: name : Logging, value :1. This will cause PDFCreator to create an advanced logfile at %Windir%\\Temp\\_pdfcmonLog.txt"

That is: Press [Windows Key] + R, type regedit, Navigate to the key she specifies above, after highlighting pdfcmon in the folder list on the left, on the right side, right click and create a new DWORD value named 'Logging' then set it with a value of 1.

Now with that on, make one more attempt at printing to PDFCreator. Then post these two log files to your new thread:

C:\\Windows\\Temp\\_pdfcmonLog.txt

C:\\Program Files\\PDFCreator\\Setuplog.txt (this may be in C:\\Program Files (x86)\\PDFCreator

Good luck, I hope they can help with that error #75. :)

 Hi ilnik,

That is not the issue that I've described at all. I would recommend posting a new thread describing in more detail what you are encountering. Enabling the advanced logging and posting (in your new thread) that log and your setuplog as I described above will be helpful in troubleshooting your issue. Good luck!
