Unable to add printer

Getting You must be an administrator to install or delete a printer. I'm logged in as an administrator.

Windows 7

PDFCreator 1.7.2.

TIA, Phil

Hi,

did you also launch the PDFCreator as admin?
If you have UAC enabled, you will need to do this (right click on pdfcreator and “run as admin”)

Robin

Thanks Robin.

I was able to add the printer after running as admin. I want to associate a new profile with just the new printer. How can I do that?

Phil

Hi,

first create a new profile (click on the “+” button located to the top of the PDFCreator options screen) and save it. Then go to the same menu where you added the printer (no need to run as admin this time) and select the profile from the drop down menu to the right of the printer and press save.

Robin

Robin,

I had already added the printer and the new profile, using your solution of March 3 (run as admin.) My recent message " associate the new profile with just the new printer", stems from the fact that the new profile now shows up in both printers, and I'm unable to delete it from either printer. I get error message "you can't delete this profile because it is associate with at least one printer." Taken literally, it seems that would lead to the situation where you can never delete any profile from any printer. Doesn't this create the possibility that the new profile, which I want to be associated with only the new printer, might also be used for a print job in the old printer?

Thanks for you help, Robin.

Phil

Hi,

you can’t delete the profile while it is associated with a printer, but you can simply set the default printer to use the default profile and the new printer to use the new profile. If you want to delete a profile completely, first “unassociate” it with any printer (by setting the associated printer to use a different profile). It doesn’t matter if the profile shows up in the dropdown list of available profiles, the printer will use the profile which is selected. User interaction would make it possible to use the “new” profile on the “old” printer, but it won’t happen by itself. Is it a security issue?

Robin

Robin,

First, I want to stress that PDFCreator is doing
everything that I had hoped it would do and more.
Namely, I wanted to be able to print a report from
an Excel spreadsheet to a specific PDF filename and
pathname (directory) without any user interaction.
I now know that I can do that with PDFCreator.

When I asked the same question of my current
product's vendor, the answer was simply "No, you
can't do that." That product cost $40 when I first
started using it. Now it costs even more and still
DOES NOT PROVIDE THE CAPABILITY that PDFCreator
does.

You ask "Is it a security issue?" In my
environment, with only two users and with only a
single application that requires the specific
capability that I'm concerned with, NO it isn't a
security issue. I think that in a different
environment, it might be an administrative issue.

Again, Robin, allow me to commend you and the
other members of the PDFCreator team on your fine
product and on your respectful and helpful support
in this matter.

Regards,
Phil
